Penny and the Quarters - You and Me

If you love a soul more than fame and gold,
and that soul feels the same about you,
It's a natural fact, there's no turning back,
and here's some advice to you:
You've got to say it's,
You and me.

Garbage - Cherry Lips

"Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)"

Garbage
Beautiful Garbage (2001)

A few more weeks until my semester ends, and I'm starting to panic because I need to make sure I frickin' pass all my frickin' subjects, and all the projects and course requirements are sprouting up simultaneously and their slowly piling up on me! (WAAAAAAAAH!)

Not to worry! (well not too much...) I'm doing my best to manage things and pace myself, not to multitask too much. Konting kembot na lang talagaaa! Go baby go go!

I think I got lucky encountering this song after so many years. Someone randomly posted this in EARPHORIA and the post didn't get so much attention from the group members, but boy did it get so much from me. This has been practically my LSS for two solid weeks.

I remember watching this music video when it came out in 2001. I was addicted to MTV Asia then, and I remember thinking how sexy and risque this video was. (and how pretty Sheryl Mason was  with her pixie cut and platinum blonde hair.) Yes, the lead singer took her clothes off, and practically sexy danced her way throughout most of the video, but the thing is, IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD.

You don't get music videos like this nowadays. Sheryl Mason looked gorgeous and yet still managed to look perfectly classy. Now, you get girls wearing as little clothes as possible, showing off their butt and boobs in an attempt to look and feel sexy, and basically get people's attention.

It's a shame that using your imagination is not so popular anymore.

Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis

Someone from EARPHORIA posted this song/video a few days back, and I loaded it on a separate tab. I had been listening to the song in the background while surfing through the net, so I wasn't paying much attention to it. I stopped the track halfway, because my roommate wanted to talk to me, afterwards I just started to listen to a different song I also loaded.

Due to the storm that came the next day, we had no internet connection in the dorm.  And although it limited the things I could do, It also made me focus on what I could do. My preloaded tabs are still intact, and so in a bid to close unnecessary tabs, I listened to this track again from the top.

First off, I now notice Tom Waits voice, what I can only compare to Neil Armstrong, I'm not always the biggest fan of smokey raspy voices, but when they work, it's magic.

Then I realized the uploader also posted the lyrics to song. And it is frickin' heartbreaking. It's a good thing I'm not listening to this on Christmas or I'll just become a depressed party pooper.

This song did not actually cause LSS, but rather I kept thinking about the song all night. I'm a sucker for songs that are virtually like short stories.

Maria Gadú - Baba

"Baba"

Maria Gadú (Cover, Originally by Kelly Key)
Composed by Kelly Key, Andinho
Self-titled  (2009)
http://www.mariagadu.com.br/

I don't know much about Maria Gadu. From observations, well she's pretty boyish, androgynous. At first I want to presume that she's lesbian, but from all the videos I've seen of her in Youtube, I think she has the biggest crush on Leandro Leo. Well, who doesn't have a crush on Leandro Leo? The way he fingers his guitar is nothing short of SMEXY. You add his voice to the equation, SMEXIER.

But for this post, it's all about Maria. (Will definitely have time for Leandro in future posts!)

I was actually looking through more Sandy and Junior videos. I was feeling pretty nostalgic, Quando Voce Passa has been always stuck in my head since 2006. So today, I got on youtube again, looking for my good acoustic versions of the song, and then there I found Maria. She's pretty darn good, and to tell you the truth I prefer her tone of voice than Sandy's Disney-ish pitch.

guitar chords here! :D

UPDATE [2.10.2012]

Had I not tried to edit this post to add the song details, I would've never found out that this was actually a cover of another Brazilian artist. I'm sorry Kelly Key, I don't know you well, but I'm passing judgement. That original "Baba" video is maybe one of the sluttiest things I've ever seen or heard! Thank God for Maria Gadu! If not for this cover, I would've never cared for this song!

No, I won't be posting a link to the original song. You can try and search for it yourself. Although I really hope you won't, I'm trying to save you from wasting your time.

Florence Welch - I Don't Wanna Know

I was searching "I Don't Want To Know" on Youtube, in hopes that it'll match to a video of a song by Fleetwood Mac. I did find want I want, but another link lead me to this excellent cover by Florence Welch of Florence + the Machines.

This RnB song suddenly got so much more soul and feeling! Florence, you can do no wrong.

TeTe - Romantico

Channel surfing through Youtube, I found myself watching a bunch of auditions for a singing competition in South Korea called Superstar K3. Though I do have a bit of a problem with singers singing english with bad pronunciations, I still recognize whether or not they actually have good singing voices to begin with. I find it quite mean for some viewers to comment on how bad some auditioners are just because they falter when they sing english lyrics. I'm like, dude try and sing in their language, and I highly doubt anyone's going to understand a word of your attempt!

Seeing a link in Korean with "Virtual Insanity" on the title, I was instantly intrigued as how that audition might go. I was surprised to see that it was a duo, I didn't really understand the start of the video very much; I just inferred that they were a rather awkward couple. But the moment the guy started playing and the girl started singing, they had caught my ears. I've not heard of a female singer with her tone, she was a bit nasally though, but that harmony by the guy. Pure love! I think my heart melted.

Then they start to sing another song. and so now I'm like, oh my gaaaahd! This is so gooood! They're so good! That song is great! Armed with the song title, "Romantico" I had to find the mp3! And so I found out that it was by a certain singer named TeTe.

I found out that this auditioning duo call themselves "Two Months". I hope the go far in the competition. :)

Emcy Corteza-Faustino - Kahit Ika'y Panaginip Lang

I've always liked this song; its lyrics most especially, but it wasn't until I heard this rendition that made me realize how gut-wrenching this song can be.

Emcy Faustino, or as we Shanghai kids lovingly call her Mommy Emcy, is such a wonderful singer. I especially love it when she sings heartfelt songs with such emotion. It's with singers like her that makes me strive to become better at singing; that to be technically good is not enough, you have to understand and feel the song, and in turn make listeners feel it as well.

With the song choice combined with Mommy Emcy's singing, just wait and see how it affects the dancers. Song starts at around [1:55].

Smith - Baby It's You

"Baby It's You"

Smith (Cover, Original by The Shirelles)
Written by Burt Bacharach (music), Luther Dixon (credited as Barney Williams) and Mack David (lyrics).
A Group Called Smith (1969)

I've heard all the versions, and all of the covers available on Youtube. In my honest opinion, no one has sang it better than Gayle McCormick. No one got even close. If anybody came near, it would be Haley Reinhart.

Hell yes I'm a fan, it's actually because of her that I learned of this song. No, I have not seen Death Proof yet.

Jeno Liu - Adore You

"崇拜你 " (English: Adore You)

Jeno Liu [劉力揚]
Written by Tanya Chua [蔡健雅]
Forward [转寄] (Nov 2009)

Though I grew up "studying" Chinese (Mandarin mostly), I don't pretend to be fluent, though I working my way to that. It's especially hard for me to discern mandarin when it's sung, because you lose all the distinct intonations to actually differentiate the words, you can only try and understand them through context and how words or characters are string together, which I guess explains why all Chinese music videos always have the lyrics as subtitles.
With that intro out of the way, "Adore You" is a featured song in a Taiwanese show I've been watching and I always love listening to it whenever they play it during a scene. Jeno Liu's voice is so warm and sweet. It surprised me to find out that she's the same girl I knew as Jade Liu who won 3rd in singing competition in China. New name, new hair, new style; talk about a complete image overhaul! But I'm happy with her decision. She stands out more now, and her music has more character to it.

After getting the song stuck in my head, I proceeded to look for the lyrics so I could sing along properly. Knowing the words only made me love the song more,
it's actually an ultimate fan anthem! haha.

Dolly Parton - Do I Ever Cross Your Mind

Oh, sometimes I go walking through fields where we walked
Long ago in the sweet used to be
And the flowers still grow, but they don't smell as sweet
As they did when you picked them for me
